I am forwarding this message which came to me regarding the Goodman
commissions from John Spicknall:

One Goodman commision composition that may not be in the Snavely
dissertation might be the piece that he commisioned jazz composer,
Oliver Nelson, to write. I don't recall the title--maybe something like
Lament for Benny--that Benny wanted for a tour(perhaps a Russian
tour in the early 70's or late 60's. Anyway, Benny apparently
disliked the piece and never performed it, perhaps due to the rich
harmonic language. Phil Woods recorded the piece with a studio band
sometime ago. His beautiful performance reminds one that he could be
a full-time first-class clarinetist of this genre should he wish to spend
more time with the dreaded black tube.
