Yes, I remember the famous listening test of French vs. German players.
I had just joined the list in the midst of the hoopla about it. I wish I
had not inadvertently brought that subject to light again.
I was merely pointing out the possibility that there is some scientific
proof of differences in sound between clarinets. I think my next step is
to find the article in my pile of
"things-still-to-be-sorted-since-moving-last-month" and make a more
detailed explanation of what I was saying.

Dan, I play an R-13 Bb clarinet and a Prestige A clarinet. I bought the
R-13 when in high school and had no idea there were different brands of
clarinets. I chose the Prestige from other Buffets, but was somewhat
limited in my choice of clarinets, being in a somewhat isolated area. I
admit, I probably could have tried some Yamahas, but I suppose that I was
influenced by my teacher. When in Chicago in 1994 at the ICA conference,
I did have the opportunity to try other brands of clarinets, and found
none that I liked as much as my Prestige. Perhaps that is because it is
what I am used to. At the end of the day, and this is outside of our
discussion, I am going to choose equipment that I feel I can sound my
best on. If my decision-making is purely subjective, so be it.

BTW, do think all mouthpieces and reeds sound the same too? And is this
whole discussion just an anti-maketing hype stance? It's too bad the
manufacturers don't just leave out the useless description and let
clarinetists make up their own minds.

Cheers,

Lisa Gartrell Yeo
