One concern about neckstraps is the pressure that it places on the neck.
It is also difficult to go from using one to playing without. In my
experience, I found that my hand technique got sloppy, and that the neck
strap really
wasn't helping get rid of my tension problems. Getting rid of the
neckstrap forced me to rethink many aspects of my playing: posture, hand
positions, thumb position, clarinet angle.
I was using a clarichord neckstrap, but I did once try a BG shoulder
strap that seemed much better. Unfortunately, it was meant for men as
the bottom attached to one's pants; not much help when you're
wearing a dress.

Neckstrapless and loving it,

Lisa Gartrell Yeo
