Niel,

Regarding your query as to whether preventative devices might cause
unforseen problems I would say stay away from the complete immobilization
recommended me 10 years ago when I was having right thumb problems due to
increased practice and painting the entire interior of my newly buily house.

The scant literature I read back then did recommend complete
immobilization. I now feel that to have been terrible advice for me at
the time. I still feel that my right hand and arm get tight very easily
and require much more stretching than before.
