Neil,
"orthopod" is a colloquialism for orthopedic surgeon. Hand specialists
are necessarily orthopedists (same meaning) having special training in
hand surgery and would be the best people for a musician to seek help
from for a musculoskeletal problem. An orthopedist without such training
may not have as much to offer
or even be lacking the special interest and expertise a musician would be
seeking. One well-known hand surgeon in San Francisco happens to be a
clarinet player! (ortho@-----.unfortunately the casual
expression orthopod would have this etymology: ortho=straight, pod=foot
(don't go to a podiatrist either, unless you can have repetitive injury
from foot tapping!)
Feldenkrais is the correct spelling of a physical therapy technique
developed by an Israeli physicist (if I recall correctly-not an MD or PT)
and very popular for treating virtually any muskuloskeletal disorder. In
simplest terms it aims to promote integrated body movements to replace
strained and fragmented ways of moving. Physical therapists can undergo
special training to become "certified" in using this method, which often
consists in prescribing individually selected exercises for the
individual.
By the way, my thumb has been bothering me for several weeks and I just
ordered a BG strap to give it a rest. Someone said "pride goeth before a
fall", so I won't let pride stand in my way!
