Regarding Joerg Peltzer's question about reed machines, I too own a
Reeddual, and have not been able to get it to work as precisely as I can do
by hand with a fine razor-knife. I can do just as much "vamp-installation"
just as quickly by hand as I can with a machine. Then the finishing is
done with wet sandpaper and water on a wet reed. By the way, I think the
main reason that my handmade reeds last longer than commercial reeds is
that they are worked on while wet, and have been soaked and dried several
times before the vamp is done, therefore the cane has been stabilized. Am
I correct in assuming that commercial reeds are milled out of dry blanks?
A random train of thought here. Sorry.
