Some time ago, my right thumb (tendon) was giving me trouble. For several
months I used an inexpensive sax strap, with a string loop in place of the
hook, to take the stress off my thumb. It's all better now, so I assume that
resting the thumb somewhat was all it needed. I know an oboe player who is
now using a strap with some elastic in it... he feels that the 'spring' of
the elastic is taking a lot of the stress off his thumb. Hope this helps.
