On 9-14 Ben Maas wrote requesting information about works for clarinet by
composers associated with the Eastman School of Music.

A substantial work by my colleague Thom Ritter George might fit with the rest of
his recital selections. His SONATA, CN241 (1967) is available from the composer
by writing to him at Idaho State University, Department of Music, Pocatello, ID
83209-8099 or via e-mail <georthom@-----.

This work was written for James and Phyllis East (former students at Eastman)
and
was noted in Burnet C. Tuthill's CONCERTO FOR CLARINET: SONATAS FOR CLARINET AND
PIANO: ANNOTATED LISTINGS, (reprinted from JOURNAL OF RESEARCH IN MUSIC
EDUCATION, Volume 20, Numbers 3 and 4) and available, at one time, from MENC.
The
exact quote is as folows:

George, Thom Ritter (c.1942- ). Sonata 1967. MS
Excellent; very musical, interesting. Technically simple, though requiring
fast fingers [in] the finale. Highly recommended.

Having performed this work several years ago, I recommend interested parties
contact the composer. I particularly enjoyed the 2nd and third movements.
Clarinetist Marcus Ely programmed this work on his ClarinetFest recital this
past
summer in Paris, France.

It would be interesting to members of klarinet and others to have a list of
works
composed by members of the Eastman School staff and former students. Dr. George
may have more information about this. I'll ask him and forward and interesting
tidbits to the list.
