Hi, Dan,

I was hoping this topic would prompt your response!

The C clarinet solo is actually in the second part (you mean the fifth
movement solo which precedes the Eb solo, right?). For the fourth
movement, "March to the Scaffold", I used my fabulous powers of
transposition from Bb to C when I played it the first time. I think this
is the typical solution if one doesn't have a C -- sure wish I did, but
hey, money doesn't grow on trees and neither do C clarinets for that
matter.

I still would prefer to play SOMETHING than to sit for all that time.
Obviously Berlioz had it in his mind that he wanted the first player to
play the Eb part -- or is that an early editor's decision? Dan L., any
word?

The Messaien piece sounds fabulous! I'd just keep scooting my chair
back even closer!

I have a single-piece/unibody whatever Buffet Eb. I was loath to try the
two-piece models at the time. I think it might be like women's bathing
suits -- perhaps they don't cover up as many flaws!

Sorry. I'm getting bizarre. I'll go now.

Jacqueline
