Some years ago it was common in some wind bands here to use a vacuum ring as a
ligature. These rings come in different sizes and are maybe even cheaper than a
shoestring. Because they are made of rounded rubber they sort of roll over the
mouthpiece/reed combination and can be placed or removed very quickly, but
they're a bit unsteady. Nowadays nobody is using them anymore.

Shoe strings are only used by Wurlitzer players, and some of them even use a
standard metal ligature (with the screws on the side of the reed).

Some other ligs. used here: the plastic Luyben and a lig. made of some sort of
fabric glued at the ends around two small metal bars pulled together by means of
a screw (is this resembling the 'Rovner' ligature?)

Recently the BG ligatures became very popular. I myself use one.
