Dex,

My gut feeling is that most people who are exposed to woodwind
instruments on a regular basis definately can tell them apart by
listening. The one thing I was a bit suprised by was how important the
players proficiency is when it comes to distinguishing between various
instruments. I really think that no matter how well someone plays,
you can tell the difference, but it is much, much more apparent when
the the instruments are being played by a less experienced player. Did
you notice this also?
