Dan,

Loree has been making hybrid oboes for years and there are quite a few
people my wife (the oboist) knows who play that combination of plastic and
wood. It isn't considered a bad thing among the oboe elite ;-)
The bore in the top joint of the oboe is sooo tiny that a high
percentage of top joints crack in the vicinity of the trill key holes.
Plastic avoids that problem entirely. I also expect, but haven't verified,
that the plastic bore is less likely to become rough from the repeated
wet/dry cycles of playing.
