Gary says he hears a difference between his clarinet and his son's
clarinet. I wrote him privately but decided to go public.

I don't know if he mean when his son plays both instruments he hears a
differance or when he plays his and his son his own, then he hears a
difference.

In the first case I believe he hears a difference because he thinks he
is supposed to hear a difference.

The second case is not a comparison. One hears oneself differently than
anyone else because the instrument is inside your head. It is a bad
way to judge one person's sound as contrasted with another.

It is also very difficult to be objective when the instrument companies are
bombarding you with hype about clarinet sound.
