Actually, it is a longish box that the entire instrument goes in. It
has two holes for your hands to go in, and one for the mouthpiece to
come out. The inside has sound absorbent material, and the sound is
kept inside the box (for the most part.) From what I understand,
they worked as well as practrice mutes do for trumpets. It would
definitely awkward having an 8X8X whatever cardboard box where your
clarinet should be though.
