Sounds like your teacher needs an excuse. Fine players can get by (and
usually more than that) on mediocre reeds. I have never heard anyone say
anything like this before who had any credibility.

Incidentally, I have heard some pretty impressive playing from players from
other countries where decent equipment simply isn't available. Sure, once
they get access to fine reeds and mouthpieces, they do better, but blaming
reeds for all one's ills is something no one wants to hear.

Either you can play or you can't.
