I have a Pete Fountain Crystal mouthpiece which I like very
much--surprisingly not for Dixieland but definitly for big band and even for
classical music though it is very sensitive and I tend to get a vibrato very
easily and a pure straight tone is not easy on it. That may be the rathor
open facing. I don't use a rubber pad--I kind of like the vibrations coming
up through my teeth. I find the hardness of the mouthpiece encourages a
gentle but firm embrochure and I don't bite so much so I get a gentler sound
in the upper register than I do with composition or rubber mouthpieces.
