Thanks to Neil Leupold and to Lou Polcari too, for your very clear answers
to my question. I've printed them out and will study them when I'm not here
at work.

My next question is about my Bb clarinet, which I've had for over 30 years.
I also have an alto of the same brand, but I've never seen another. It's a
wood instrument and the trademark is an oval lyre-like thing similar to
Buffet's. Inside the oval it says: SIOUR
ROBERT
PARIS
and underneath the oval:FRANCE
ARTISTE
Is this considered a good instrument? I've never played another to be
honest, so I wouldn't know.
