I have now had a reply from the Honk Kong Uni, and they are investigating
the problem, in addition it appears that the mail has stopped. I recieved a
Fax and a number of emails from the HKBU site, I will reply, if the list
owners don't mind. Here is one e-mail

>Dear Mr. Wilson,
>
>Subject: E-mail Problem
>
>This is in response to your recent E-mail and fax message to our
>University President and others.
>
>We are trying to track down the problem and solve it. In the meanwhile,
>we believe that we have for the present prevented further immediate
>occurrences of the problem by imposing a filter on our outgoing Internet
>t~ raffic which will prevent any and all traffic to your site. To obtain a
>full solution and prevent re-occurrences when we subsequently remove the
>filter, we need some additional information.
>
>1) Is KLARINET@-----.BITNET a list server which automatically sends
> to its subscribers anything which is sent to
> KLARINET@-----.BITNET?
>
>2) What is the subject area of the material on this list server? Our
> postmaster program for our Server 06 provides for users in our Arts
> Faculty, including Music and Fine Arts Department, English
> Department, Chinese Department, and Religion and Philosophy
> Department. We need to identify which user(s) were being addressed
> when the mail was sent to our postmaster.
>
>3) Do you currently have any subscribers to your list server from our
> University? (That is, subscribers whose address is @-----.HK?)
> If so, please identify them to us.
>
>At the current stage in our investigations, it appears that up to 50
>(your estimate) of our former students may be registered subscribers to
>your list server. When these students graduated, we have no mechanism to
>"unsubscribe" them from any list servers to which they had previously
>subscribed. Under the circumstances, it appears that your list server
>attempted to send these 50 students the file "clarchrt.gif". Our
>postmaster program on Server 06 could not locate their E-mail box
>(because they have graduated and their accounts have been deleted). So,
>we speculate, our postmaster programme treated an incoming E-mail from
>your list server as undeliverable and returned it to the sender. Your
>list server then treated it as an ordinary incoming E-mail and forwarded
>it to all other subscribers on your list server. Anyway, that is our
>current working hypothesis. Your comments will be helpful.
>
>Thank you for your assistance, and please accept our apologies for the
>inconveniences which have occurred. We look forward to any assistance
>you can give us to sort out this matter.
>
>
>Sincerely yours,
>
