Patrick,
I don't think the price is going to be much better, given the
exchange rate right now, but the selection might be better than any store
except maybe Weiner's of the Buffet factory on Long Island. As for
Rossini, I like De Peyer's old recording (despite the tone) and Stoltzman
does a good, if idiosynchratic, job with it.
I usually tell parents to start their little ones on a recorder
or even a song-flute (a pre-recorder instrument developed for school
progrtams). I wait till the child is actually big enoug to hold the thing
before starting them out. There are some people who use eefers to start
little ones off but I'm not
sure that's great because when you finally switch up to the standard size
the student basically has to relearn everything including embouchure! As
for a plateau instrument, DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!! They are miserably stuffy, heavy
(too much metal), unresponsive instruments. A perfect example of a good idea
which doesn't work in practice.
