Hi Lou,

I noticed your comment about a tuning chart in a response to another post.
I
recently changed mouthpieces - from a Giliotti "P" to a Pyne "BN". Along
with
the mouthpiece change came some intonation changes. I noticed them while
practicing, then I played my first rehearsal & concert with it a few days
ago
& the differences were more apparent. Strangely enough, I've spent lots of
time recently playing duets with a member of this list who is also a
composer, (he's just completed six for clarinets) & the pitch didn't seem
much different then. It's only on a few notes. Anyway, I have been
considering making a chart & would be most interested in finding out just
how
you went about it. I haven't done one since Jr. High school. Since I play
R-13's as you do, it would also be interesting to see how my chart compares
to yours.

If you have a minute, please respond & give me the details. (I'm going to
include my address just in case your chart is easily reproduced & you feel
like sharing it for comparison purposes).

Sorry its taken me so long to get back to you, I am preparing for an oral
exam, and writing an application that is very involved. So About the tuning
chart.

Here is the idea for the chart... if you have an electronic tuner and a
friend handy that will help. But first on some blank manuscript, write a
chromatic scale that includes every alternate fingering i.e. B/F# M and
Chromatic ( so there will be about ten different entries for G3.) Each
fingering is and entry upon which you enter the results. Once you have
that, make copies of the chart I did ten at a time. now you are ready to
begin. Warm the clarinet up.

Just a few points to remember. 1) don't use any shade fingering for the
throat tones, ( to get an accurate idea of were the pitch is normally) 2)
Dynamic should be comfortable between Forte and Piano. 3) record the
reading only at the middle of the pitch (not the attack or the decay). 4)
take the average of three per entree. 5) have you partner watch the tuner
and not you. 5) try not to make any adjustments with you embouchure. 6)
Repeat three or four time over a week.

once this chat is done you will know exactly where the pitch for your
clarinet and MP combo. I just did the chart again when I bought my new
Borbek Mp I know how it is... how do you like you new MPs?
