Bass clarinets (i) - Thank you, Ann Walker, for ultra-friendly message - I
probably confused the issue by referring to a "spike" (which is what mine
is) rather than a "peg". It's because I was fed up of the shortcomingd
of this method of securing(??) the instrument that I wanted to use a strap.
(ii) - A subjectively looser embouchure than on the B flat is certainly
needed, it seems - *noT* thinking you have to bunch up your bottom lip is a
good idea.
Stanford - his clarinet concerto is unfortunately written for *both* B
flat and A instruments, which may well explain why it hasn't been played
a lot
- I don't suppose soloists much like the idea of picking up a cold(?) A
to do the difficult bits. I'm pretty sure the sonata is currently in
print, by the way - 1918 was its date of first publication, Stainer &
Bell are still the publishers. (I have a copy, bought in the early
eighties, with a blue and white striped cover ...). As far as I know,
the concerto is in print too; I thought it was republished much more
recently than 1977.
