For you jazz fans out there, and I know there are a bunch of you, do
try to catch the movie "Kansas City," if it comes your way. I
attended a preview showing last night, compliments of the local jazz
and classical public radio stations. It was shown at a theater that
specializes in low distribution, artsy type movies. However, Newsweek
just ran a review on it, so it must be getting a fairly wide
distribution. If you want a full synopsis of the movie check out the
current Newsweek. For the purposes of this posting, it would be
sufficient to say that the movie is about the corrupt politics,
racism, and shear grittiness of Kansas City in the 30's.

The reason I am posting this note is because the movie features a lot
of jazz. Not actors pretending to play jazz, but real jazz musicians
like James Carter, Craig Handy, Joshua Redman, and Ron Carter (per
Newsweek--I couldn't read the credits fast enough). Also getting a
lot of play time was a clarinetist who played some real sweet
clarinet (sorry, I'm ashamed to say I don't know who he is, but would
like to know). Some of the music was in the background, but a lot of
it was in front of the camera and it seemed live to me. The
musicians don't have any speaking parts, but if you are a jazz lover,
you wouldn't want it any other way. Though movie audiences seldom
applaud these days, the many jazz fans in this audience went wild.
See it!
