Thanks to all the people who responded to my "stupid question" regarding
turning a Bb clarinet into an A. Last night I experimented with the string
thing. I cut the string off a Yamaha swab, so I had a long piece of nylon
cord about 1/4" wide with a metal weight on the end. I tucked the other end
into the barrel joint. It was flatter alright, but not quite A, and sounded
plain bad. I'll keep trying. The only reason I want to do this is that I
foolishly bought a Music Minus One version of Mozart's Quintet for Clarinet
& Strings in A. I can't bring myself to tackle the Bb clarinet version,
which is of course in B major, when the A clarinet version, in C major, is
right there unfettered by all those bothersome sharps.
