Like myself, Bob suggests that Mary buy an A clarinet instead of learning
to transpose, but then gives as the mechanism of transposition, a notoriously
difficult one; i.e., the changing of keys so as to adjust each pitch as it
is encountered in playing.

I hope that Mary buys an A, but if she does not, transposition has several
approaches only one of which is suggested by Bob. There is also the clef
alteration technique which I consider infinitely superior because it also
provides you with an ability to deal in multiple clefs as well as fixing
the transposition problem. In effect, you become a better musician if
you can deal with multiple clefs even if you don't use the technique to
learn how to transpose.
