A couple of days ago a question was raised as to whether changing the
barrel of the clarinet could change its tuning. Something
similiar to this was done in days past. A quote from Chapter 2 of
The Cambridge Companion to the Clarinet (The Development of the
Clarinet, by Nicholas Shackleton, pg. 24):

" Usually,a player used the same stock and bell with alternative upper
joints, or corps de rechange to convert the instrument from Bb to A
(and, less commonly, from C to Bb, and from Eb to D). This practice
came to an end with the increasing mechanisation in the nineteenth
century."

The Cambridge Companion to the Clarinet is fascinating reading, even
for me (the non-clarinetist on the list).
