Re: Harmonie version of Die Entf=FChrung aus dem Serail "discovered" by
Bastiaan Blomhert.

Like the infamous "Odessa Symphony" it seems that the discovery of Mozart's
own harmoniemusik version of "Die Entf=FChrung" at Donaueschingen by=
Bastiaan
Blomhert is a case of "Entdeckungsfreude". I saw in the notes of a recent
recording that this music is now believed to be by Rosiniack.=20

Does anyone have any further information about this re-attribution?=20

The arrangement seems to me to be better than the ones published by Musica
Rara - more detailed and imaginative scoring, and less of an oboe concerto.
Also it is refreshing to hear the C clarinet used in this combination. If
the arrangement is indeed by Rosiniack, then it makes me very curious to
compare his other arrangements of Mozart. David Whitwell's book on the
literature of the wind band in the classic period lists an octet version of
"Die Zauberfl=F6te" arranged by Rosiniack (as well as several other Mozart
opera transcriptions which have gone missing).=20

Has anyone out there played this or have a copy?=20

One more question:=20

Does anyone have any information about the practice of having a double bass
playing along in harmonie combinations where no part is specifically given?
(Apart from that well known siloutte. We don't know WHAT they are playing.)
In pieces where there are written out bass parts (for example Mozart's Gran
Partita, the Krommer Nonets) the use of the double bass adds much to the
depth and richness of the sound. In the past I have constructed my own bass
parts for other works on the basis that one shouldn't be too precious,
especially with arrangements. It would be good to find out if there was some
historical basis to this practice. (Quite possibly it wasn't documented
anyway.) I have even seen this practice applied to Mozart's original sextet
version of K 375 with wonderful results.=20

Interestingly in Blomhert's recording of the Entf=FChrung music with an
American period instrument group (the Amadeus Winds) they don't add a bass=
...

Thanks in advance,
