I usually use only a peg when playing the bass. However, I will use
a neck-strap when I'm doing quite a bit of playing in the altissimo
range-- it seems to keep the bass much more stable. I've found the
two-hook straps to be much more stable than the one-hook straps as
far as balance and control go.
As for clarinet straps, I use one when my wrist is hurting. It works
well to keep the weight off my right arm. It also works *very* well
when I'm marching-- those two to three miles can get very tiring on
a body, especially a middle-aged one.

A short aside about flaming-- I've been severely flamed before for some
comment that I've made on the Klarinet list, and it's not pleasant. Please
keep these kind of notes private; that way the person involved doesn't feel
like they've just been taken to the head of the class and reprimanded.
