(sorry I wasn't able to get this one out sooner, my mistake.)

Dearest STEVE...I was very happy to receive your reply! I sent out that
notice on a whim and had a very good response. I made the all-state band
last year and this year. I am soon to be a senior in high school. I
know what you mean about being obsessive over certain parts... oh Lord...
I was such a perfectionist last year and it took me 8 hours to make my
final all-state tape. I'm not too much of a perfectionist anymore. Life
is too ironic...This year during the auditions, the roll call people were
idiots and forgot to call my name at the wrong time. I had practiced
myself nearly to death and knew everything just about up and down... I
got nervous and I didn't do quite well on my audition. I ended up 25th
in the concert band. But no pressure, you're right... I was down about
that for a while but now I just play for fun, and more power to me if I
have talent. :)Ah... we played "Valdres" in our community band! That's
the funky Norwegian march... LOL... I think lots of things have changed.
The All-State members now stay in hotels and I think that each year's
sight-reading piece is now handwritten by the judges. This year I was in
Stockton, the year before, in Oxnard. There was no CMEA trip this year,
and I was kind of bummed about that. Last year we went to Pasadena, but
nothing so flashy as Disneyland!!! If you are familiar with modern band
literature, next year will be the 40th or 50th anniversary of the
all-state band, and the establishment is flying in two esteemed
conductor-composers -- Elliot Del Borgo and Johan de Meij. Wow! There's
no way I can lose if I make it! I'm quite familiar with both of them!
(excited) Well... things have changed quite a bit in CBDA procedures...
schools are now allowed to send in 7 tapes -- 5 from the "standard"
instruments and 2 from an "endangered species" list of tuba, contra-bass
clarinet, etc. In past years CBDA has had trouble getting those
instruments for all-state. Well whaddaya know... this year, for the first
time in CBDA history, my school sent 7 people to all-state! 2 clarinets
(one meeee!!!), 3 French horns, and 2 tubas. I live in Suisun City, CA,
and I attend Fairfield High School in Fairfield. (P.S. Any Scarlet
Brigade alumni out there??? Would love to hear from you!!!) I attend
several honor bands every year. It's a good thing. :)Marylou
