There are a growing number of player (pro and college) that are using a
neck strap. If it works for you, great. I don't use one. I've tried the
"Clarichord" and didn't like that it was elastic. When using a neck strap,
you have to be very careful of your front teeth meeting the mouthpiece - as
in don't knock them out! I felt that the clarinet was too locked into my
mouth. I just rest the bell on my knee or between my knees - be sure to
move it away from your legs for the long notes (B/E, C/F).
I do use a neckstrap (and peg) when I'm playing bass clarinet. A
great neckstrap is the Neotech. This strap has a large pad for the back of
the neck so there isn't a small strap cutting into your neck.
