The entire instrument is a fingering nightmare that makes me wish I took
up the trombone.

And, as for reeds, ligatures, mouthpieces and general maintenance, you'd
think we were all playing a sensitive antique Jaguar.

I still remember those who discouraged me from taking up the clarinet
because it has so many obstacles.

"Try the flute; you don't have to care for any wood or worry about reeds."

"Go for the sax; if you like jazz, that's the instrument to play. No one's
playing the clarinet anymore."

"The trumpet. Now that's a man's horn."

But there's nothing that sounds as beautiful to my ear than a
clarinet--in any register. It's worth all the pain.
