I'm surprised I don't see much more discussion about Keith Stein's
foundational
and yet somehow at the same time very advanced "The Art of Clarinet Playing".
He was David Pino's teacher, and the dedicatee of Pino's very good but
somewhat less pithy book. Stein's book is actually part of a series; I also
have the piano book in the series and it is (also) excellent writing. Since
I send my mail from work (I spent my computer money on clarinets) I
can't quote this stuff as accurately as I'd like. If anybody wants more
concrete publication info, let me know. By the way, one of the contributors
of the Cambridge Guide, Nick Schakleton, is on this forum. I find the
Stubbins book intimidating, and I use it more as a reference taken in small,
easily-assimilated doses. O. Lee Gibson has written a remarkable book "
Clarinet
Acoustics" that hints at a wealth of insight beneath it's understated, super-
polite
style. Compared to Pino, where everything is stated twice, Gibson's book
leaves you trying to peek between the lines to discover more. ---Bill Fogle.
