Barry,
I'll try again. I still think it should be an F. The last beat of measure 23
has the pattern F-G, Bb-Ab,F- Eb all in 16th triplets resolving to the Eb.
Notice the Whole Step Pattern. A G would change the pattern. In my last
posting I wrote an F would upset the Pattern (doit!!) - I hit the wrong key on
my keyboard (it's not the first time I did that with this Rose discussion).
I'll play F (yes F) and you can play G. I just hope we don't have to
play it together in unison. I'll be away teaching at a
Festival for the next week, so I'll have to resume later in this
discussion.

David,

Are you arguing for or against the F?

I did not notice the pattern in measure 11. I'll have to take a look
tonight when I get home. Your observation about the stepwise pattern
supports my comment about the Ab being a passing tone. Putting in an F
would introduce a minor third, and the forces the Ab/F to function as a
very weak V7 in a position which already very weak rhythmically and
durationally.

Barry,
I'm not a theorist. I think it should be an F because-(Rose etude #23) The
last beat of measure 23 has the pattern G-F-G, Bb-Ab-F all in 16th triplets
going to an Eb . Notice the Whole Step Pattern. An F would upset the pattern
and sounds quite weak to me. Also see Measure 11 and look at the last beat
pattern. It is very similar@-----.
