There was a question recently about whether some note in a Rose etude
should be an F or a G. I kept expecting to see someone respond with a
musical reason why it should be one or the other, but I never saw one. I'm
probably the least qualified on this list to attack this problem but I
thought I'd give it a try anyway.

I believe it was the last note in the 22nd measure of the 23rd etude in
Rose 32. If I'm in the wrong place, the rest of this note is meaningless.
Anyway, the key is Eb and the whole 22nd measure is built on the tonic
triad. The 4th beat is a sextuplet where the 1st and 3rd notes are G. The
4th note of the 6 is an Ab which in the context of the tonic triad would
normally be a passing tone from Bb to G. The first beat of the following
measure is still on the tonic triad. The 23rd measure then moves to the
dominant and the phrase resolves in the 24th measure with a half note on
the second (F) down to Eb on beat 3. Given the context of the tonic triad
in the 22nd measure and the resolution in the 24th measure, it makes sense
to me that the note in question should be a G and not an F.
