I think the audition he was talking about was the ARTS contest held by
the National Advancement for the Arts. I did this last year. You make a
tape of yourself playing the required pieces and send it to the
organization, where it is judged. The top players go to Florida to compete
for, I believe, three scholarships. Honorable mentions get something too,
I think. Lots and lots of kids enter this (I think it's for people about
senior in high school age -- I don't remember), so your chances of actually
winning anything are slim, unless you're REALLY good. You compete against
instrumentalists as well as singers, artists, and dancers. You receive a
score between 1-10 (10 being the best). I got a 4, but my tape sucked
because I didn't have a lot of time to tape or get my pieces ready. If I
had had more time I probably could have done a little better (maybe a 6).
