Bruce...
Your mention of Col. Arnauld Gabriel brought back some great memories. I
worked with him last year when I was in the CMEA CA All-State Honor Band.
Wow! The guy is amazing. We played the Odom arrangement of "Orpheus in
the Underworld," "Toccata" by Frescobaldi, "Rolling Thunder" by a
composer I can't recall, and "Festival Variations" by Claude T. Smith.
That last piece, in particular, is one of the most dynamic and difficult
pieces I have ever played.
Aside from the fact that Col. Gabriel was pleasant to work with, he had
every single one of the scores MEMORIZED!!! He is obviously a man in
love with his work.
The crazy tuba players from my school also got him hooked on gummy worms.
;) (LOL)
Sincerely,
Marylou G. Verano
