Adam...

I suggest you play either Copland's Clarinet Concerto or Bernstein's
Clarinet Concerto for that 20th century piece. I haven't played either,
but I've heard both, and they are both enchanting pieces.

For an unaccompanied piece, try a movement of Messaien's "Quatuor Por La
Fin Du Temps." There is an acapella clarinet movement called "Abime des
Oieaux" ("Abyss of the Birds") that is quite modern... it may alienate
a few judges, I am afraid, but it's very very modern. :)

Tell me more about this national audition! I am also a young clarinetist
(I will be a senior in high school this fall). Is this for a
scholarship? An honor band? Tell me the details!!!

Sincerely,

Marylou Verano
