Do you/should you assign library work as part of the educational experience
for the university clarinet/performance major studio?

Yes and yes.

Besides the biographical and historical information one needs to bring to
the understanding of the compositions one teaches/learns, there is a wealth
of material that musicians should find of interest in a college/university
library. As a goal to achieving as much knowledge as possible, each student
should read a book or periodical each semester and write a review of the
material found. This can be a one-page synopsis including the book's
chapters, brief comments about the materials found and its appropriateness,
and helpful hints on performance practice, technical performance solutions,
etc.

Many university libraries also have computer access and students can use the
internet and CD-ROM materials. An assignement to surf for musical "stuff" is
a good way for finding more information.

Students should be encouraged to peruse the library contents via computer
for solo materials, ensemble music, teaching methods, musical periodicals
devoted to specific instruments, e.g. THE CLARINET, bibliographies, etc.
Libraries also have standard reference materials that are helpful to
performance majors or just students of the clarinet.

One of my favorite musical dictionaries is: SCHIRMER PRONOUNCING POCKET
MANUAL OF MUSICAL TERMS, edited by Theodore Baker and revised by Nicolas
Slonimsky. Both of the terms slentando and stentando are defined here. It's
an inexpensive dictionary and pocket-sized. For more in depth research of a
musical term one would probably find the NEW HARVARD DICTIONARY OF MUSIC in
your local college library.

The International Clarinet Association would like to see subscriptions to
THE CLARINET for all college/university libraries. If you are a student, ask
your teacher and/or librarian to subscribe. If you are a clarinet teacher,
suggest adding this great periodical to your university serial collection.
Cost: $35/year in US, $40 in Canada/Mexico, $50 in all other countries.

Stan Geidels' Online Clarinet Resource is a "must" see for my students. The
articles and links to other great clarinet sites are super!

Best wishes,
