Dear Dr. Geidel,
As I senior performance major, students should definitely be assigned library
work. My private clarinet teachers never stressed the importance of having
historical knowledge of the composer, piece, etc. I only fully realized this
importance as a sophomore in a scholarship audtion. The judges asked me
questions about all four of my pieces, and I was completely embarassed in my
lack of knowledge. Teachers should definitely stress the importance of such
knoweldge, and since there are so many demands on a college student, making
library assignments seems to be almost the only way the student will make sure
to go and do the research.
