I recently finished reading Paul Hindemith's treatise on harmony. He also
wrote a more instructional book on theory with exercises, designed for the
beginner to acquire the essentials in as short a time as possible. I'm
presently reading "The Schillinger Method of Composition" by Joseph
Schillinger, which is a much more detailed theory of music, covering rhythm and
melody, as well as harmony.
