Marylou,
I'm a high school student also and I have made the Oklahoma all-state band
one year so far. I want to tell you, just because your band director gave
you that B45, doesn't mean you only have to use that mouthpiece. Also, in
the private instruction I've had, in clarinet playing these days, the outcome
is better not by opening your throat, but by raising your tongue to a higher
position inside the mouth and pointing your air stream towards your nasal
cavity. I find this concept better because it gives a little sizzle to your
sound and improves the way it sounds from a distance.(ex: what the judge
hears in your audition). I need to mention another thing. When you raise
your tongue and focus the air stream, it creates a tube inside your mouth
that causes the sizzle in the sound. Thanks!

Jared
