I played in the State Honor Band in 1969. As I recall, we had to send in an
audition tape. From there, players were selected to come to Honor Band and
audition for Concert Band or Symphonic Band. We had to perform a excerpt
from a piece we were sent prior to the audition. We also had to sight read
something, and play a few scales. One piece of advice: when the musicians
who were selected to audition first came out of the jury room, they blabbed
to everybody else what they had to play. "Oh man, we had to play B Major
throughout the range of the instrument," or something to that effect. Well,
of course everybody else started to practice B Major like it was going out
of style! So, if you are competitive, mum is the word. I think people that
auditioned later, as I did, probably fared better than the fodder who went
first.

Other than that, practice, practice, practice.
