Knowing that musical meanings of terms often differ from the actual meaning
the same term may carry as a word, I was curious what "stentando" actually
means to a native Italian. Since I had some business over at the university
today, I went to see Stefano Giorgini, a guest of ours from Italy who is
teaching at one of our summer music camps. I asked Stefano what the word
"stentando" means. His reply: "Ah, stentando...it means hesitating." I
explained that the word appeared in a musical score, and there was something
of a debate going on about its meaning. He indicated that to an Italian, it
meant "hesitating" both in music as well as in ordinary Italian usage.
