I didn't see Bill Fogle's original post, so I don't know what Bill wrote and
what part was Andrew's. Probably the trouble with those service band
openings for many players is that they are MILITARY service bands. With the
possible exception of the Marine Band (although I may be out of date on
this), there are things like basic training and the possibility, however
remote, of reassignment to regular non-musical military duties. There is (or
was when I was in one of those bands) a lot of nonsense to put up with in
military groups that civilian orchestras and bands have long since
eliminated through collective bargaining agreements. Contract law has never
seemed to hold much sway in the army.
