Sorry to take issue but my less than serious Oxford Companion (Scholes) has
this to say:

STENTARE - to 'labour', to play in a laborious way. So Stentando,
'labouring', 'retarding'; Stentatamento, Stentato, etc.

BTW, the word Stendento you mention appears also as Stendendo.
