Grant,

It is true that some people feel that the sound they internalize changes
because of the vibrations of the reed. They feel the vibrations through
their teeth. While I don't know if this is always true their attitude of
this subject will definitely have an effect on their playing.

It is true that you can just buy commercial patchs made by Bay, Yamaha and
many others. You can stack the patches on top of each other to get desired
thickness. To me this eliminates the messing around with rubber cement and
patches. If you're inclined to "tinker" the patches and cement work great.
I like patches because they protect my mouthpiece and give me a secure
mouthpiece position with no sliding. Patches are also great for students
that have slightly uneven upper teeth. You can keep stacking until you can
minimize this problem.
