David,
I have an old A. Fontaine (France) alto which plays (I'm positive
it needs some pad work because the seal is nowhere near perfect).
The wod is in excellent condition - no cracks, chips, etc. The keywork is
nickle-plated and has a few spots of green oxidation.
It was given to me by a friend who said he would never have any use for
it and maybe I'd like to make a lamp out of it. That's what I've been
saving it for. However, make me an offer. I'd rather see a playable
instrument get played (even an alto, gasp!) than made into a lamp, which
is what I do with various useless, old, damaged/worn-out musical instruments
from clarinets/saxes to violins.
