Hi... I was in Albert Alphin's shop today, and he had one of the recently
discussed Lyons clarinets, and I must say, it is the absolute wierdest
instument I have ever seen! It is shaped like the old metal clarinets,
but the bore looks as if it was in two pieces, and was snapped together,
right down the middle. It has the wierdest plastic mechanisms, with
little rubber gasgets for pads. It doesn't have any alternate fingerings
(two pinky keys for each hand, I didn't figure out which keys were for
which notes). The oddest thing I noticed was that it weighed next to
nothing! A four year old you easily play it. I didn't play it, but I
asked Mr. Alphin, and he said it had surprisingly good tone and
intonation. If I had to simply describe it, it looked to me like it had
been put together from a plastic model kit! He said they generally cost
around $200.
