Nicole,

There are several schools that offer a 2 year certificate or degree
in Musical Instrument Technology. Among them:

Redwing
Western Iowa Tech
Renton Technical College of Renton, WA
5 Towns College in New York

Another way of learning something _specific_, such as replacing
clarinet pads, is to be willing to pay a tech for his time and
materials to teach you. At 40 or 50 dollars an hour, you probably
would learn pretty fast! ;-)

Also, if you have access to a library that has inter-library loans,
you probably will be able to find some of the manuals of the trade.
They have been mentioned already. (Brand Manual, A Clarinetist's
Notebook by Robert Schmidt, some others that were written for Band
Director types, etc.) Which brings up another possibility; if your
school has a music department, they may have a course available on
emergency repairs for music ed majors. (I am assuming you are in
college.)

There is a Web page that is managed by the instructor at Renton. It
is under construction, but may have some more information for you. It
is called the "Music Trader" and is at

http://www.musictrader.com/

Check it out. If you have any more specific questions, I'll be more
than happy to help.

later,

Steve
