Roger,

You could take some light sandpaper and abrade some of that thickness off
of your center cork. It may just be tight because there's too much of
it. You don't want to get into the habit of using *too* much cork
grease, because this also carries potentially disastrous effects. If the
cork becomes saturated, it will disintegrate.
