M=FChlfeld indeed played an instrument modified from the M=FCller system whi=
ch
was, if I remember correctly, designed by Carl Baermann. This type of
clarinet was plagued with fingering difficulties for the performer, and was
soon to be superceeded by the Oehler. I believe that Pamela Weston
describes this in detail in Clarinet Virtuosi of the Past which I
unfortunately do not own and can't check for more details.
